Balance / Dizziness
Dizziness is a term used to describe a range of sensations, such as feeling faint, woozy, weak or unsteady. Dizziness that creates the false sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving is called vertigo.Dizziness is one of the more common reasons adults visit their doctors. Frequent dizzy spells or constant dizziness can significantly affect your life. But dizziness rarely signals a life-threatening condition.Treatment of dizziness depends on the cause and your symptoms. It's usually effective, but the problem may recur.
We carry out a range of balance assessments targeting the inner ear vestibular apparatus. The tests are able to detect changes in sensitivity of the balance mechanisms and localise the source of the dizzy sensations.
We carry out a range of specialised tests including:
Positional tests.
Moving the head to different positions to see if symptoms are triggered.
Caloric Test
Water at temperatures above and below body temperature is tricked into the ear canal to stimulate the inner ear.
Video head impulse test (vHIT) Short rapid head movements are used to stimulate the inner ear semi-circular canals. Image above shows results from this test.
Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs)
Sound pulses in the ear stimulate the balance receptors which detect gravity allowing us to records results from the muscles in the neck.
